Why Learn Arabic as a Muslim Child Growing Up in Britain

When Muslim parents in East London consider enrolling their child in Arabic classes, the motivation is usually simple: they want their child to understand the Quran. That instinct is right — and the benefits extend even further than most parents realise.

Direct Access to the Quran

The Quran was revealed in Arabic. A child who can read and understand Quranic Arabic engages with the word of Allah in its original form — not through a translation.

Cognitive Benefits of Bilingualism

Decades of research confirm bilingual children develop stronger cognitive flexibility, better problem-solving, and improved literacy in both languages. Arabic builds particularly strong grammatical intuition.

Islamic Identity and Rootedness

A child who can greet in Arabic, understand khutbahs, and read their salah with comprehension has a rootedness in their Muslim identity that is deeply protective in today's world.

An Increasingly Valuable Skill

Arabic is one of the six official UN languages, spoken by 400+ million people across 22 countries. For British Muslims pursuing careers in law, medicine, or international relations, Arabic literacy is a significant professional asset.

Our Arabic Curriculum at Taalam Learning Centre

Quranic Arabic vs. Modern Standard Arabic — What We Teach and Why

We begin with Quranic Arabic. This is the fastest and most direct route to our primary goal: your child being able to engage with the Quran in its original form. When a child can read and understand the Surah they recite in salah, prayer transforms from ritual into meaning. That transformation motivates continued learning far more powerfully than abstract grammar lessons.

For advanced students, we introduce Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) as an enrichment layer — ideal for those preparing for GCSE Arabic or aiming for deeper academic mastery.

Speaking

Building confidence in everyday Arabic conversation — from greetings to discussion.

Reading

From letter recognition to reading Quranic texts with fluency.

Writing

Written Arabic — from letter formation to essay writing.

Comprehension

Understanding Quranic and Modern Standard Arabic texts in context.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the most common questions from parents.

What level is right for my child?

We assess every new student before they begin and place them in the right group for their current level — not their age. A child who has never studied Arabic before starts at beginner, regardless of age. Contact us to arrange a free assessment.

Will my child learn Quranic Arabic or conversational Arabic?

We begin with Quranic Arabic — this is the fastest and most direct route to Quran reading and spiritual connection. For advanced students, we introduce Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) as an enrichment layer. This sequencing ensures every student leaves with the most important thing: the ability to engage with the Quran in its original language.

Do you prepare students for GCSE Arabic?

Yes — our advanced classes specifically prepare students for AQA Arabic (8658) and Edexcel Arabic GCSE. We cover all four skills: reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Many of our students achieve grade 7–9 (A–A*) in their GCSE Arabic exams.

Can my child attend if they have no Arabic background at home?

Absolutely — in fact, many children find Arabic fresh and exciting precisely because it is distinct from everything they know. Structured, consistent teaching at Taalam is more important than speaking Arabic at home. We begin from scratch for students who need it.

Do you offer online Arabic classes?

We offer live online Arabic classes for Arabic, Pre-GCSE Arabic, GCSE Arabic, and A Level Arabic. Classes follow the same curriculum and small-group structure as our in-person sessions. Contact us to learn more.
